I will be receiving over 6 figure profit sharing amount in the near future. I want to invest it, and receive a monthly pay out for my retirement. This is other then an annuity. I am 63 and receiving social security.

My mom has paid off her house and car and has good income as well as good insurance (including long-term care) and a reserve fund in savings. She has about $150k to invest (that will be basically money for her heirs). Her financial advisor is recommending $100k in a variable annuity and $50k in a REIT. Is this a good option? What else would you recommend? The financial manager doesn’t charge up-front fees, is he sucking away our money through hidden fees?
You guys are awesome! I personally just use Vanguard and would NEVER get an advisor unless I just paid a fee up-front for advice. I think this guy has been hanging around trying to weasel his way into her emotional life to make commissions off her cash. She’s in a low-tax state (her heirs are in high-tax ones) so I would prefer Vanguard stocks and bonds for this money she won’t need.

Currently with Trowe the money market acount is growing at maybe .50%. Spoke to the agent and i saw their capital bonds grew 26% last year and has been positive 9-10 years. the guy on the phone didnt want me to move the money so it seemed. WHats your trowe account advice to grow thats a safe investment?

A friends advisor suggested he place his mother money (aprox. 300k) into a annuity. Promising no chance of loss of principle and up to 13% interest. I suggested during these times, stick with a high yeilding short term cd’s (1 year or so) Your thoughts?
